Laundry Symbols

Terms of Use and Accuracy

By The Laundry Symbols team at 1000 Ventures Last reviewed

Laundry Symbols is a free tool that helps you read care labels. Its readings are a guide, and the tag on the garment is always the final word.

Using the site

You may use the scanner and the guides for free, for personal and household use. Please do not copy the site, scrape it in bulk or use the scanner to build a competing service.

Readings are a guide

The scanner is an AI model. On our test of 132 real tag photos it read 96% of symbols right, which also means it sometimes gets one wrong. Before you wash something valuable, delicate or hard to replace, compare the reading with the tag. For tailoring, leather, fur or heirloom textiles, ask a professional cleaner.

Accuracy

These make a wrong reading more likely:

  • Blurry or distant photos, where the dots and lines under a symbol are only a few pixels.
  • Faded, creased or shiny satin tags, and glare from a flash.
  • National symbols outside the international set, such as the older Japanese and Korean symbols with written characters. The scanner does not know these.
  • Words on US tags such as "short cycle" or "no steam", which the scanner does not read.

No warranty

The site and tool are provided as is, without warranty of any kind. Use them at your own risk.

Care symbols and standards

The care symbols are defined by ISO 3758 and ASTM D5489 and registered as trademarks by GINETEX in many countries. We show them to explain what they mean. Laundry Symbols is not affiliated with GINETEX, ISO or ASTM.
