About Laundry Symbols
Laundry Symbols is a free laundry symbol scanner. You point your phone at a care tag and it tells you, in plain words, how to wash, dry and iron the item.
Why we built it
Care tags pack five instructions into a row of tiny pictograms, and the details that matter most are the smallest: one dot or two, one line under the tub or none. Charts help, but you still have to match each symbol by eye. We wanted something that reads the whole tag at once, the way you would read it to a friend.
How the tool works
Two small AI models run on our server. The first finds every symbol on the photo. The second rereads each one up close and names it, including its dots and lines. Plain code then turns the symbols into one instruction. Your photo is read in memory and deleted right after, never stored. The method page explains the models, the data and how accurate they are.
Sources
The meanings follow the two care labelling standards in use today: ISO 3758 (the GINETEX system used in Europe, the UK and most of Asia) and ASTM D5489 (used in the US). The scanner learned from photos of real care tags plus symbols we drew ourselves.
Who makes this
Laundry Symbols is built and run by 1000 Ventures, a small independent studio that makes free, single-purpose web tools. You can reach us on the contact page.
How this is funded
The site is free and has no ads today. If we add ads later, they will never sit inside the scanner or change what it tells you.
Have the tag in your hand? The scanner reads every symbol in seconds.
